Getty Images’ photographer Matt Cardy wins Photographer of the Year at the Press Awards 2010
London, UK– April 6, 2011: Getty Images’ photojournalist Matt Cardy was named Photographer of the Year at the prestigious 2010 Press Awards, held last night in London at the Savoy hotel.
Coordinated by The Society of Editors, the Press Awards celebrates the best of British journalism, recognising excellence in both individuals and teams in the media industry, across 25 different categories and is acknowledged as the most prestigious event in the industry’s calendar.
In the photographer of the year category, the esteemed panel of judges, led by Bob Satchwell, the Executive Director of The Society of Editors, were looking for versatility, technical skill and the ability to capture the news picture that matters, as well as images which captured the subject strongly. Matt Cardy’s winning portfolio of three groundbreaking images proved to encompass all of these elements.
Award winning Getty Images’ photographer Matt Cardy says: “It is a real honour to win this prestigious award, given the incredibly tough competition in this category. I am thrilled to have been part of the Getty Images news team and their support has made this winning work possible.”
Adrian Murrell, Senior Vice President, Global Editorial, Getty Images says: “We are extremely proud that Matt has been recognised for his outstanding work with the Photographer of the Year award. His portfolio is made up of the groundbreaking and compelling content Matt shot at Wootton Basset, the most powerful image taken from hundreds of similar repatriations; an image of David Cameron, Nick Clegg and Gordon Brown, which perfectly captured the uncertainty in British politics, as the three parties struggled to form a coalition after the election; and an image of National Trust’s Stourhead, simply exquisite in its execution and featured in double page spreads in The Guardian and the Daily Mail.”
